BETHLEHEM: THE HOUSE OF BREAD

Luke 2:4-7, 15

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son,  She wrapped him in swaddling cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

15 the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

John 6:35

35 And Jesus said to them,”I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger. He who believes in me shall never thirst.”

Bethlehem meaning, the “House of Bread,” was descriptive of this small town where simply stated, much bread was being baked, sold, and distributed. Christ being born in Bethlehem, the “house of bread,” is of extreme prophetic significance for us individually, and for the world itself. The fact that Jesus Christ being born in Bethlehem, “the house of bread,” signifies this profound truth: Christ himself is the bread of life, for those hungering and yearning for fulfillment in life, the nourisher and satisifier of every soul.

The Christ child was laid in a manger. The manger, a feeding trough, was filled with prophetic symbolic of His provision and care. I’ve often thought however that the manger, being a place of feeding, in a sense can be likened to a “bread basket.” In simplicity let’s ponder these thoughts:

Christ the Bread of Life

Was born in the House of Bread (Bethlehem)

And laid in a Bread Basket (Manger)

The manger takes on deep meaning. Just as it cradled the newborn king, it foreshadowed the nourishment He would provide for humanity. His teachings, His love, His sacrificial death, His very being became the bread that would satisfy the deepest hunger of the human heart.

We often search for fulfillment in fleeting things, but Jesus, the bread of life, offers us enduring sustenance and true satisfaction. He invites us to partake of His grace and love, to a daily feast that transcends earthly provisions. He comes to fills us with fullness and joy that the world cannot offer.

Christ the bread of life, born in the house of bread, laid in a bread basket manger – is a reminder of the abundant provision that Christ offers. He is the bread of life, the source of all true fulfillment, and He invites us to come to Him, to receive Him as savior and Lord, and be nourished by His everlasting grace and love.

How often do we feed on the husks of human experience that can never satisfy? Truly, Jesus our living bread has come to satiate our souls.

What about you? Are you famished from the empty diet of empty things? Have you received the Christ, living bread? Today is the day for you to say, “Lord, I’m hungry. I receive you as Lord and savior, the Satisfier of my soul.”
