“A Life of Purpose” – Helen Keller

A Snapshot of the Life of Helen Keller

“I am come that they might have life, and that more abundantly” – John 10:10
“Many persons have the wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy puprose.” – Hellen Keller

Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1800 in the small rural town of Tuscumbia, Alabama. At 19 months of age, she was overcome with what was then called, “brain fever,” which doctors believe today was scarlet fever or meningitis. It became apparent that Helen’s illness had left her blind and deaf, creating untold suffering in her life, and the lives of her family members for the next 5 years.

At 6 years of age, the Keller family, received a personal teacher for Helen named Anne Sullivan. With daunting courage and determination, Miss Sullivan proceeded to teach, and train, the unruly Helen Keller.

Through much difficulty, Helen Keller began to learn to read, write, and communicate. She received a proper education, and graduated from college in 1904, showing remarkable intelligence. In the next years, Helen toured many nations, lecturing the world on her experiences and beliefs.
Her tours entralled and amazed the masses.

Her determination, dedication, and courage, was the result of her faith in Christ, which she often communicated with boldness and conviction. Winston Churchill called Helen Keller, “the greatest woman of our age.”

What are you living for?

Marketing hype and media sources teach us that life consists of the accumluation of wealth, possessions, and experiences. It doesn’t take a lot of living to realize that the newest, the latest, and the best “things” in life, still leave us feeling empty.

Life is more that the pursuit of personal gratification. We are called to a higher purpose.

Jesus gave us several keys to greatness. Life is meaningful when lived for God and others. A life of purpose is a life filled with God-given vision and direction. Take time today to seek God for a higher dimension of abundant life.
