Going Out on a Limb (Part 1)

GOING OUT ON A LIMB   (part 1)

“It seemed good for us … to send chosen men … with Barnabus and Saul. Men that have hazarded their lives for the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” – Acts 15:25,26 (KJV)

In one definition, the idiom to “go out on the limb,” is understood to describe an individual who places himself in a position of risk and uncertainty, being bold and assertive in actions and speech.    The expression is taken from the idea of climbing trees and getting on a limb.  The further you get out on the limb, the shakier it gets.  Tree climbing is risky business.  I know. I’ve climbed a lot of trees in my young years, getting myself on out on thin bending limbs!

Many years ago, a group of European botanists were doing research in a remote part of the Alps. Their search was leading them to the discovery of new varieties of flowers that grew only in these mountains, and on a certain day during their outings, they noticed a rare prized flower growing at the bottom of a deep ravine.  They immediately realized that only way to get at it was to lower someone on a rope into the valley, and as they discussed a plan about how to get down into the valley to gain their prize, there was a curious Swiss boy watching and listening.

When the scientists noticed his slight size, the question was posed to the boy, asking if he would be willing to get a specimen of the flower.   The plan they announced, was to tie a rope around his waist with the men gently lowering him to the floor of the ravine.

Looking down at the depth of the ravine, the young boy started to leave saying, “Wait a bit.  I’ll be right back.” He ran off and soon returned with an older man. The boy spoke now with authority and confidence saying to the scientists, “I’ll go over the cliff and get the flower for you but this man must hold the rope.” “He’s my father!”

Take confidence – the truth is – Any risk or venture undertaken in faith and prayer in the Name of the Lord Jesus, means that God is holding your rope, and He won’t let go.

I encourage you – be bold and assertive in Christ concerning the passion that moves your heart.  Go out on a limb.  God’s holding on and He won’t let go! He will help you to get the prize.
